February is Black History Month, and the Jack Hadley Black History Museum is celebrating it in a big way. It’s holding the 5th annual Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Festival and Thomasville-Thomas County Public Safety Day on Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free to attend, and free hotdogs and drinks will be provided. You can also take a free self-guided tour of the museum. With so much free fun, be sure to attend this festival with your friends or family.
Who Are the Buffalo Soldiers?
If you’ve never been to this event before, you might not be familiar with the term “Buffalo Soldiers.” You will learn about them at the festival, but let’s go over a quick rundown.
After the Civil War, African-American men started their own regiments of soldiers. Many of the soldiers had fought alongside Union soldiers during the Civil War and became Buffalo Soldiers after the war ended. As Buffalo Soldiers, they engaged in battle on the western frontier. The Buffalo Soldiers didn’t just include infantrymen. The 9th and 10th cavalries were also Buffalo Soldiers.
Now, Thomasville has its own 9th and 10th Calvary Unit. The unit will be on hand to talk to guests about the role of the Buffalo Soldiers. The talks will be interesting for people of all ages. If you want to learn more about African-American history, this is a great place to start.
