Every year, millions of people make New Year’s Resolutions. They resolve to get fit, eat more nutritiously, save money, or spend more time with their family. More often than not, New Year’s resolutions are abandoned within a few months, but that doesn’t have to be the case for you. Implement these tips and trick to beat the odds and keep your New Year’s Resolution this year.

Choose A Specific Goal

Resolving to achieve better work life balance and spend more time with your family is a great thing to strive toward. However, using those statements as a New Year’s resolution aren’t likely to have good results. Why? Because they are too vague. Work life balance could mean a number of things to different people. Without a specific resolution it will be hard for you to visualize your goal and create a plan to make it happen. Instead of vague ideas create concrete goals you can work toward. For instance, instead of resolving to spend more time with your family, commit to have dinner around the table at least three times a week.  Instead of achieving work life balance, commit to leaving the office at a specific time each day.

Focus on One Thing At A Time

Beginning a new year can gives you a fresh start and the sense that anything is possible. While it is true that you can accomplish quite a lot in the 365 days ahead, you can’t accomplish everything at once. If you have several New Year’s resolutions, try limiting yourself to one goal at a time. Taking on too many resolution can feel overwhelming and when you feel overwhelmed you are more likely to shirk the resolutions all together. Pick the goal that means the most to you and strive to reach it.

Make A Plan

Another reason many people don’t reach they’re resolutions is a failure to plan. Take a few minutes to write out a detailed plan for how you plan to achieve your New Year’s resolution. For instance, if your resolution is to have dinner with your family, make a schedule around all of your family member’s obligations and create a meal prepping strategy.
