Most people think of Toyota and automobiles. However, this company actually works on a wide range of technology that can enhance the future, both inside and outside of your vehicle. One of the latest developments is Kirobo Mini, a verbal communications robot.
Building on Kirobo
If you have been following Toyota news for a while, you may remember it created Kirobo several years ago. This talking robot was 13.4 inches tall. At the time, it was part of the very first conversation experiment between humans and robots. During this experiment, Kirobo had a conversation with Commander Koichi Wakata, who was at the International Space Station.
Meet Kirobo Mini
Toyota has taken the intervening years to develop Kirobo Mini, a robot that performs similar functions but is only 4 inches tall. It is small enough to fit in someone’s palm and be highly portable. This is great since Kirobo Mini was created to be a companion for people on longer trips. During a conversation, the robot uses some familiar mannerisms, such as tilting its head toward whoever is talking. This robot can move its hands and head. It can actually engage in casual conversation, as well.
To let the robot adjust its gestures and tone to match conversations, it has a built-in camera that lets it recognize facial expressions. With some help from connected services, like its location, the robot can give you personalized comments, such as congratulations on completing a long drive.
Designated Audience
Kirobo Mini comes with Bluetooth so you can connect it to your smartphone via the unique application. This robot was designed for Japan, in particular, as a way to elicit emotional responses and improve the falling birthrates in the country. Designated Toyota dealers in Aichi Prefecture and Tokyo will first be selling the robot, followed by those across the country. There still isn’t information on whether it will be available globally.
