Did you receive a beautiful, large floral arrangement on Valentine’s Day that inspired you? Maybe you have always loved flowers, or you are looking for a new business venture, so why not try your hand with some floral arrangements? Check out these basic floral design tips, straight from a professional. Before you know it, your house will be blooming with fresh décor.
Trimming Technique
Before arranging flowers, the long stems need to be trimmed. After, transfer to water immediately.
The Vase
In between floral arrangements, be sure to wash the vase. That way, there is no grime or bacteria build-up, which would put your flowers at risk to die out quickly. You can easily put it in the dishwasher.
Filling the Arrangement
Unsure of what flowers you should be using? Use whatever is in season to achieve the prettiest bouquet. Also, don’t be afraid to run outside and throw in a few things from your yard. Depending on the season, that can mean a few greenery clippings, freshly bloomed dahlias from your summer garden, or your favorite color of fall leaves.
Layering the Blooms
First, start the arrangement with your choice of greenery as a base. Then, fill in your “wow” factor blooms. Once you have those components in the arrangement, you can fill in with your choice of a “filler” flower.

Remove Foliage and Refresh the Water
Once your arrangement is complete and sitting in a vase, to prolong the flowers lifetime, be sure to remove any foliage that is submerged in water and refresh the water to get the most time out of your blooms. Foliage kept underwater will create bacteria that will make your flowers die sooner. Changing the water will do away with the bacteria as well.
