Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and there’s no better way to celebrate than baking up some delicious sweets for your sweetheart. Forgo the usual box of chocolates and the store-bought candies, and impress your loved one with your expert baking skills instead. With that, here are a couple of delicious and out-of-the-ordinary Valentine’s Day sweet recipes that will win you all kinds of brownie points.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups With Sea Salt

These sweet snacks are a homemade version of the popular peanut butter cups. They are easy to prepare and are perfect for exchanges, parties, and Valentine’s Day. All that you need are:

  • 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of Maldon sea salt
  • 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips (your choice)

The process is simple: Place the chocolate chips in a bowl and melt them for 90 seconds. Stir until smooth. Then place a spoonful of melted chocolate in small paper liners in a mini-muffin tin and refrigerate for 10 minutes. Separately combine the peanut butter and powdered sugar in a bowl and stir. Then roll one teaspoon of peanut butter mixture into a ball and then flatten it into a disk. Repeat with the rest of the mixture.

Once the chocolate has cooled, place the flattened peanut butter mixture on top of the chocolate mixture. Top the cups with remaining melted chocolate to cover. You can find the full recipe here.

Blood Orange Granita

Do something a bit different this year and surprise your loved one with a blood-orange granita treat. These delicious snacks are similar to shaved ice or snow cones, except it not being made with sugary corn syrup. You will instead use fresh blood orange juice and a hint of agave. All that you need are:

  • 4 cups of blood orange juice (about 8 oranges)
  • 1/3 cup agave or honey

When you squeeze out the juice from the blood oranges, be sure to save the shells for serving. You will use the shells as cups for your mixture.

The process begins by combining the blood orange juice and agave in an eight-by-eight dish. Whisk to combine. Place the mixture in the freezer for an hour. After an hour, scrape the mixture with a fork to break up the pieces. Place back in the freezer for yet another hour.

Repeat the process until the granita is similar to shaved ice. This might take several hours. Once the granita has the consistency of shaved ice, serve in the blood orange shells or bowls. The full recipe can be found here.
