Home improvement projects like starting an herb garden can be pretty intimidating. But with this simple project, you can have all of the rewards of a garden, without having to go outside! It takes only a few minutes to make and your herbs will be ready in just a few weeks.
What You’ll Need:
Mason Jars
Chalk Paint
Chalk
Rocks or Pebbles
Moisture Control Potting Mix
Herb Seeds
Directions:
Step 1: Rinse your mason jars out with soap and water. If a label needs to be removed, soak the jars in a mixture of warm water and dish soap for 30 minutes, and then peel the label off. Hint: the label should come off easily, if not, it needs to be soaked for longer. Dip a paper towel in rubbing alcohol and rub off any leftover sticky spots.
Step 2: Use masking tape to tape off a rectangular section on your jar. This will be where the herb labels will be written so make sure it’s the size you want.
Step 3: Apply a thick, smooth layer of chalk paint over your rectangle in one stroke and let dry for 1 hour. If you want to apply another coat, let the first coat dry fully before applying. Then, remove masking tape and label your jars.
Step 4: Fill about 1-2 inches of your jar with rocks, pebbles or marbles. Then, fill the rest of the jar up with your choice of potting mix, leaving about 1 inch at the top of your jar.
Step 5: Plant your herb seeds of choice (following instructions on packet) and top off your jar with more potting soil.
Step 6: Lightly water the top of your soil, and place them near a windowsill or countertop that receives ample sunlight. Then, watch your herbs grow!
