How To Ease Sunburn Pain

Women's hands apply cream from burns to skin lesions.

Today is the Fourth of July. You’re going to bask in the sun and probably end the day with skin that’s the same color as the American flag. If you’re unsure how to treat your stinging, red skin, read over these tips for easing your sunburn the safe way.

Speak with Your Doctor

Before following any home remedies, taking medication, or applying any topical creams, contact your doctor about a sunburn care plan.

Cool it

As soon as you start to notice your skin turning pink or red, take a dip in the pool or ocean, but make it snappy. Cooling off your skin in the water will ease the burn, but staying in the water for too long will increase your exposure.

Stay Moisturized

One of the best ways to reduce pain and pealing is to keep your skin moisturized. A sunburn can be very drying. Make sure you are using a basic lotion that is made for sensitive skin or a product that contains aloe vera. Oil-based lotions will only do more harm to your sunburn.

Ease the Pain

After being cleared by a doctor, treat your sunburn pains with some over-the-counter medications. Anti-inflammatory medicine like aspirin or ibuprofen should ease the sting. Use cold compresses to stay cool and apply one percent cortisone cream if it is recommended by your physician to do so. At night, sleep in loose clothing for comfort.

Stay Hydrated

Being out in the sun drains your energy and dehydrates you. One of the best ways to recover from sunburn is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water and beverages that contain electrolytes will restore both your energy and your skin.

Avoiding Bad Sunburns

You won’t have to take notes on these tips if you avoid the sun. If you’re headed to the beach or lake this summer, always wear sunscreen. Reapply every couple of hours. Always sit under an umbrella, wear a hat to block your scalp from sun exposure, and bring long pants and long shirts to throw on if you feel like you are getting too much sun.
