Art has been a part of human culture since the days of cave painting. From single dimension renditions of stick figures and antelopes, we’ve come a long way. That’s not to say, however, that all of us are budding DaVincis. If you could use some practice with the brush, check out these Thomasville art classes.
Paint, Sculpt, Create
Throughout July and August, the Thomasville Center for the Arts is offering art courses for seniors, children, and adults. View the full schedule, and register online while spots are available.
- Friday, July 14 – Senior Moments Painting Class | Beach Landscape. This course is offered to seniors looking for hands-on exposure to the arts. Participants will learn to paint a beach landscape using supplies provided by the art center. This event is free for residents of Southern Pines, with regular tickets being just $10. The 1.5-hour class begins at 9:30 a.m.
- Saturday, July 15 – Pottery Workshop | Pinch & Plant. Learn to craft handmade pinch pot planters at this pottery and gardening combo. This is the first of a two-part series. In the first class, participants will build their planters and send them to be glazed, fired, and attached with ropes. The following week, July 22, you will plant succulents in your pots. After that, it’s up to you to keep them alive! The cost for the full course is $60 and includes all materials. Each hour-long lesson begins at 10 a.m.
- Thursday, July 20 – Whet Your Palette Painting Class | Sailboat. Spruce up the living room with a new painting – signed by you! In this installment, you will learn the intricacies of painting sailboats. The medium will be 6 x 6 oil on canvas. As always, supplies are provided by the center. Bring your own snacks and beverages, and make it a party. Tickets are priced at $25 per person. The ship sets sail at 6 p.m. for this 2-hour class.
- Thursday, July 27. Public Open Studio | Military Mosaic. There’s nothing like being a part of something bigger than yourself. Members of the Thomasville community are invited to come out and help craft this collaborative mosaic. The public art project will be a 6 x 6 pentagon sculpture covered in 40 sq ft of mosaic tiles. Artist Marty Hawthorn created this initiative to commemorate the military experience in times of both war and peace by featuring historical images fired on ceramic tiles. For this free event, visit Studio 209 anytime between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
