Meriwether-Pike Scenic Byway
The Meriwether-Pike Scenic Byway covers an area known as the Cove. The Cove was once home to Native Americans, bootleggers and a president. The 55-mile route begins at Warm Springs, home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Little White House. In Woodbury, you can pull off at the western end of the Big Red Oak Covered Bridge. This bridge is 391-feet long and it is Georgia’s oldest remaining covered bridge. Other highlights worth stopping for are the Oakland Baptist Church and Jones Mill. This byway is full of Georgia history!
Enduring Farmlands Scenic Byway
The Enduring Farmlands Scenic Byway covers more than 60 miles of pastoral farmland in Pulaski and Wilcox counties. This byway is like traveling back in time as you pass the historical towns of Pineview, Hawkinsville, Rochelle, and Abbeville. Park the car and stop by a local farmers market, visit a Civil War heritage site, and explore the Ocmulgee River. If you like architecture then stop by and see the Hawkinsville Opera House. This beautiful opera house was built in 1907.
Coastal Highway U.S. 17
In the early 20th century, Coastal Highway U.S. 17 was traveled by Midwesterners and Canadians headed to vacation in the southern sunshine. The route passes through Richmond Hill, Darien, Butler Island, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, and the port city of Brunswick. While cruising along U.S. 17 you’ll want to make time to stop at St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Jekyll Island. This highway passes by old military forts, rivers, salt marshes, and old rice plantations. This really is a beautiful drive. Make a day of it!
Woodpecker Trail – Highway 121
The Woodpecker Trail is the perfect scenic drive for nature lovers. It is among the oldest planned tourist routes in the U.S. It is named for the woodpeckers that live in the nearby pine forests. The Georgia part of the drive is 204 miles long and it passes through Folkston, Metter, and Augusta. Be sure to stop at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge! It is home to endangered woodpeckers, cranes, robins, owls, hawks, and bald eagles.
