As much as we stay on the go, it’s hard to keep the inside of our vehicles neat and tidy. Add kids into the mix and it’s almost impossible to eliminate the clutter. But we’ve found a few vehicle organization hacks to help even the messiest driver keep things clean.
Do it Weekly
It sounds like a lot, but it’s much easier to get rid of a week’s worth of crumbs and clutter than it is to tackle a year’s worth. Start with a really good deep cleaning (or hire someone else to do it). Then find a time that’s convenient and stick to a schedule. If you stay on top of keeping your vehicle clean, you’ll be much less tempted to give up because it’s gotten out of control.
One Compartment at a Time
The center console is a place where random objects and trash like to collect. Toss or relocate what you don’t need, and just stick with the essentials. Once you’ve figured out what needs to stay, find a logical way to store it. Buy an inexpensive plastic organizer or pouches, or repurpose something you already have. Make sure to leave a little bit of extra space for things that will inevitably end up getting thrown in there. The glove box should be a bit simpler. An accordion pouch is a great option for keeping small, thin items organized.
Set Rules
Consider implementing a no food policy. Be prepared to adhere to it yourself. If you do decide to keep snacks in the car for emergencies, go with options that don’t produce as many crumbs. Make a rule that everyone has to remove every item they’ve brought to the car, every time they get out of it. This goes for shoes, sports equipment, jackets, and anything else that tends to get left behind. If you’re worried about forgetting something at home, designate a spot for it in the house or garage so you’ll see it on your way out.

Leave the Trunk for Last
Put all the things you don’t need as often (or hope to never need) in the trunk or rear cargo area. Stow things like tools, first aid kids, and blankets somewhere out of the way. Under the seats or beneath the floor of the cargo area are a few other places you can store these items.
Finally, make it a family affair! Involve everyone, including the kids, in getting (and keeping) the family vehicle organized. The more invested they are, the cleaner your vehicle will stay!
