Thomasville Toyota Is Proud to Present South Georgia Ballet Tutus and Tennis Shoes 10k, 5k, and Fun Run

Ballet Tutus and Tennis Shoes

Thomasville Toyota is a proud sponsor of the 2017 Tutus and Tennis Shoes 5k, 10k, and Fun Run. People are encouraged to don a tutu and take part in the run on Sept. 9 at Millpond Road at Thomas University. It costs $40 to register for the 10k, $25 for the 5k, and $15 for the kids’ fun run. The proceeds go to the South Georgia Ballet’s Special Steps Dance Program. That’s a great reason to grab a tutu and go for a run.

About the Special Steps Dance Program

When the South Georgia Ballet put on its first Tutus and Tennis Shoes race, it had the dream of starting a special needs dance program. That dream was realized thanks to the high level of community support. The race attracted 150 participants, and it raised more than $10,000. That was more than enough to get the program off the ground, but more money is needed to keep it going. As a participant, you will do your part to help people with special needs express themselves through dance.

The Importance of the Special Steps Dance Program

Ballet helps those with special needs in so many ways. First, it helps with body awareness. When you’re on the dance floor, you need to understand all parts of your body and how they function. This can be difficult for people who have a sensory processing disorder. Fortunately, they are able to learn body awareness through dance. They learn how to use the space around them and follow movement patterns.

People with special needs also get important social interaction when they attend the Special Steps Dance Program. Special needs children are able to dance and interact with their peers. This is a confidence builder that follows people into the real world.

Those with special needs also benefit from the creative expression involved in dance. Many people have trouble expressing themselves, but it can be especially difficult for those who have autism or another special need. With dance, people can get in touch with their emotions in a safe way. They can begin to explore the different emotions they feel and learn how to express them in a positive way.
