What’s New for the 2017 Toyota Highlander?

2017 Toyota Highlander ThomasvilleToyota is starting to release information on the 2017 lineup, and one of the first models to get a makeover is the 2017 Toyota Highlander. The latest version of this family-favorite SUV gets a new engine, a new transmission, some styling changes, and more trim levels.

New Toyota Highlander Trim Levels

Those who decide to wait to buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander will find themselves with even more trim levels to choose from than before. Instead of the previous five trim levels, the Highlander will offer a new SE model that is designed to be sportier, bringing the total to six. This trim will slide in between the XLE and Limited. Those who want the efficiency of the Highlander Hybrid can now choose from the LE and XLE in addition to the Limited and Platinum. Since these are lower trim levels, these additions make the 2017 Highlander even more affordable.

Updates Under the Hood

If you look under the hood of a 2016 and 2017 Highlander, you will notice several differences. The newly available 3.5-liter V6 engine features direct injection and significantly boosts the horsepower of the vehicle while enhancing fuel efficiency. It is joined by a new Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission. You can expect this combination to appear on the 2017 Toyota Sienna, as well.

To further boost efficiency, models with the V6 will have a Stop and Start Engine System that turns off the engine when you go to a complete stop before seamlessly starting up again. The 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed automatic are still standard.

2017 Toyota Highlander Enhanced Styling

Just looking at the 2017 Highlander will give you a hint of some of the changes. Every grade gets a new grille design with unique finishes across the lineup. There are also new exterior colors and a newly available brown leather interior.

Safer Than Ever

The Highlander was already known for its top safety ratings, but Toyota is now making the Toyota Safety Sense P system standard across the Highlander lineup. This means that every single version of this three-row SUV gets automatic high beams, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a pedestrian pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure alert.
